Calm Season – Silent Night

I just unwittingly made a stranger laugh whilst overtaking him on the escalator at IP Pavlova at the same time as trying to describe Calm Season to Adam. “I suppose it’s kind of folky rocky, but not in a shit way, it’s actually really good” was probably not my most eloquent contribution to the English language, but it got the point across. I only started listening to the duo, comprising of singer/guitarist Adam ‘Piaf’ Vopička and singer/cellist Terezie Kovalová, a few days ago but already I’m hooked. Their songs are packed with infectious melodies and the strings perfectly complement Vopička’s singing. There’s also a sense of power and urgency that is difficult to achieve at the best of times, let alone without the aid of drums. I think Silent Night is just about my favourite of the two tracks that I could find but I’m looking forward to hearing a lot more from them in the future.
